Default Long distance petrol tank

To all fellow amazoners. I wonder if there is someone out there who can help with this little conundrum. I am building a long distance rally car from a Volvo Amazon 122 S. The topic is petrol tanks. My question is does anyone have experience with a aluminium versus a plastic tank. It seems our american colleagues are a little ahead of the game here. I have heard however that the quality of some of those tanks even from reputable providers in bad with lots of debris in even a new tank. Is there is major weight saving, are plastic tanks safe enough from perforation and are there any major advantages/disadvantages to either material?

At first check the rules/ the rule book!!!
Best and safest is rubber cell inside a box made of alloy. I did build one special at the front of the trunk area. Shaped like a L over head. Over the rear, and behind the axle. Maximum insude rules at that time, 150L
Regards, Kay

P.S. rules said the new rubber cell is only permitted for 5 years!!!!
