Generally when this happens, there are two routes to go. One, as Bone (greetings!) has suggested, is to replace the engine which is usually quite economical as the 163D5 is fairly cheap to buy secondhand these days..... two, is to replace the cylinder head, or depending on the extent of the damage have it repaired? We haven’t seen one of these for a few months, but when we need a head repaired we use a chap in Cornwall who’s actually quite talented at repairing and machining these heads. When this happens it usually breaks two or more hydraulic lifter seats and these can be repaired... You send your head away with cams etc, he’ll send it back all machined and assembled ready to fit back on... simples. Not cheap, but nothing like you have been quoted, especially if you can do a bit yourself.

The decision has been made for the XC70 to return home and I will be doing the removal of the head (stage 1) to assess for head damage.

Yours is perhaps the 10th blown D5 from the aux belt wrapping around the crank pulley, that I read about on this forum. It should only need a new engine head, but first it's time to inspect for a seized air conditioning compressor pulley or for a failed aux belt tensioner. A used head is the cheapest way to go, or even a used engine.

Given it’s 14 year old car, I can’t imagine it’s worth much. Certainly not enough for head/engine replacement. Time to cut your losses and sell it as a non runner.
