Default Loss of power

Hi there, recently bought a 2010 XC90 2.4l Auto and to be honest it has spent more tie in the dealership than on my driveway. Main issue is when driving/accelerating up an incline or hill intermittently the car developed power issues and its like it goes into a limp mode although you can still slowly get it up to 60mph. The car was taken back to garage I bought it from and they didnt believe me funny that, eventually it was sent to a volvo dealer and they diagnosed the problem to a defective Boost Presure Sensor. This was replaced and 2 weeks later same issue again. It went back to the dealership and now they have replaced the intercooler and funnily enough 2 weeks later it has developed same issue. I am now wondering is this fault common among these cars or am I just unlucky, I did notice they have not replaced the flexible hose that connects to the intercooler which may not be a problem but I would have thought this would be more likely to develope into a fault than the intercooler which did appear to be in good condition. Any help would be appreciated as now thinking about cutting loses and getting rid of this car.

I feel your pain but... would persevere with it.

- It will be a £30 sensor or hose causing it

- It needs to go to someone who is familar with them

- Once fixed and you've got used to it - you wont look back

Would need to know what the error codes are to suggest what the problem might be?

Thanks for the advice but the car has now been into a volvo dealership 3 times now for repairs as the garage I bought it from cant diagnose the problem, and it aint cheap thankfully its on warranty and not me paying its running into thousands very eye watering sums being chucked at it. There was a long list of codes when it first went in but probably most of them due to a failing battery which was the first issue. The codes which are relevant to this issue are as follows ECM 1517, ECM 1540, ECM 1600.

Hi, With the front windows open if you hoof it up the road can you hear any wooshing sound coming from the front when its under full boost ? If so you may have a split in one if the intercooler boost pipes.

regards Ben

Thanks will give it a try. Its an annoying fault as only happens now and again not all the time. It was used on motorway no problem kick down worked everything fine for a few days and then as per usual on a slow bit of road going up hill it losses power and starts revving funny and goes into a limp mode but no engine warning lights present, very strange.

Get them to check the Resonator seals too.... one small split in them and you'll get all kinds of loss of power...

Could be sticky inlet guide vanes in the turbo. That will produce a boost pressure code. A turbo wash might help if it is not too bad otherwise it will need a replacement (or refurbishment).

The symptoms described in the OP sound like what we experienced, this turned out to be a damaged turbo actuator, needing a replacement turbo.

£2.4K including the swirl flap fix which they assured us was the problem intiially (£700).

:-(

It could be the dpf/exhaust temperature sensor. There has been a few owners who have had problems like yours, me being one and a new sensor solved the problem.

I experienced exactly the same symptoms as you with my car and it turned out to be nothing more than a leaking intercooler hose.
I also experienced the failed DPF temperature sensor, which is a known fault on my 2010 models, but that only threw up a warning light and did not put the car into limp mode.
