Default D5 ECU 'upgrade' whilst in for service

Just to let people know that there is a Volvo ECU upgrade available for the D5, mine is the '07 MY.

Had it's 2nd year service performed yesterday at 28.5k miles and the garage advised that they had 'upgraded' the ECU in accordance with Volvo Service protocols.

All they were able to tell me about the change was it 'would help reduce the soot'. Not the most informative response I've ever had If anyone has any further details I'd like to hear from them.

More worryingly the car showed wear in the front locating bushes and these will be replaced under warranty.

Garage advised me that they were surprised by the amount of wear these bushes exhibited however the car was not dangerous in it's current state so I could have it back. Have booked int back in in three weeks time to have the work done. They are also replacing a 'swirl valve' at the same time, also under warranty.

Whilst I found the cost of the service a bit painful (GBP480) especially as nothing 'extra' was performed I'm still glad that I had it done as otherwise I'd never have found out about the faulty bushes.

Finally, like many have said before, glad the forum is back up and running .......

My late 2007 V70 D5 was updated prior to the remap. They said the update was to do with the oxygen sensors and how spurious values were dealt with. It had caused mine to overfuel - and hence a possible tendancy towards sooty emissions

They updated the ECU on my car a few weeks ago when I had the recall carried out for the steering hose.
Not sure if it's just me, but I do notice a slight difference in engine/gearbox behaviour. In general it seems to go up a gear at lower revs than normal and also stick in a gear longer before changing down when accelerating.

Haven't noticed any changes in consumption (unfortunately)

Yep - concur about the gearbox behaviour. It definitely holds the gear longer. Makes the drive a lot better IMHO

my MY2008 has just had a service and I noticed this also, though the dealer never mentioned any upgrade. My sevice came in at £253 which compares favourably.

Had a run over the M62 from Grimsby to Morecambe, kept a steady 70-75 mph plus a long traffic jam due to an accident. Averaged 36.6mpg which was around normal for a long steady run, so no obvious increase in performance there.

Ron,

Nope, that was for it's 2nd year or 36k miles (whichever the sooner) service. In addition to the service the price included a courtesy car though this is obviously paid for by the cost of the hourly service rate.

The car belongs to me so it's not that I can 'charge the company' for it, especially as I don't work. What hurts most though is the £400 VED renewal I've just received through the post to go with the £400 fully comp insurance renewal.

Total cost of car this month (excl diesel) is £1,200, or, if you look at it logically, £100pm excluding depreciation

I've no idea where you live but the price I've paid is one of the many joys of living down south where the roads are apparently paved with Lehman Brothers bankers.

I finally see some benifits, to living in the North of Scotland:-

18000 mile service carried out at 17490 miles - cost £195.81.

36000 mile service carried out a 34517 miles (had to be done early, due to planned, 3300 mile trip) - cost £370.37.
But, while driving through France, mobile rings, due to admin mistake, we overcharged by £57.49, for your service. Should have been £312.88.

We pay more for diesel and other things, in the wilderness, but it looks like servicing is cheaper than down south.

One would have thought there would be a uniform policy, regarding servicing costs, but I suppose one has to take, overheads and staff wages into consideration.

Anyone know if there is an ECU upgrade is for all model year D5's or just the later models?

Where are the front locating bushes? Suspension or engine?

Roy,

They locate the lower suspension wishbones to the subframe, at least these are the ones on my car that are being replaced.

The garage told me that the wear experienced was well beyond limit and resembled something that they would expect to find on a car perhaps 4 or 5 years older than mine.

For the record I use my car just as the maker intended i.e. on the road. The problem is that I live on the Kent / Sussex border and the roads here are shocking. This was confirmed to me by a holiday to the Brecon Beacons last month which reminded me how roads should look / feel instead of being bumpy and covered in 'spray on tarmac & chippings' instead of proper repairs.

Dave.
