Default Old dog....new tricks

My daughter told me of a great way of defrosting her car ( can't believe its her idea) She sent my a Whatapp video of her clearing her windows of frost using a freezer bag filled with warm water and tied off with a snap tie so it is reusable - it worked brill. - no scraping/re scraping just a slowish rubbing motion and job done in under 2 minutes.

Cheers
Bob

My wife informed me of this the other day, could also use rubber gloves etc. Obviously i dismissed her and carried on using my deicer spray and scraper!

Joking aside i will try it when ther eis a frost down here again. Not often though here in the south coast.

I was advised once, a long time ago, never to use hot water as the sudden temperature change could cause the windscreen glass to crack. Tne warm water bag sounds quite sensible but I still think that using my favourite plastic scraper is less bother. I stopped using a spray de-icer when I realised that it caused increased misting on the inside of the windscreen.

An advantage of the bag of water or the bottle of water is that you have to carry it to the car, so you won't make it to hot to hold; the cracked windscreen thing I thought was more to do with people boiling a kettle then throwing that over the screen.
I tend to use a scraper but occasionally use a bottle of warm water if the ice is the result of the screen being wet and then freezing which causes a harder ice.

for me i start the car, then hit it with the water, then its already warming up so reducing the risk of re-icing, the worst part is icy wipers....

Agree. Moderately hot water probably ok but definitely not boiling hot kettle water. Normal frost scrapes off fairly easily with my favourite scraper but frozen rain is a more difficult matter and the wipers are probably frozen to the screen as well. Have to admit that I resort to the de-icer spray to assist with that.

I've been tempted to use the spray deicer a few times when it's really cold and icy, but all I achieve is a slightly thicker layer of blue stinky ice as it freezes too.

I find that delivers I certainly sprays leave a film over the glass that even volvo screen fluid struggles to shift so avoid using them if possible.

The volvo warms up quickly to de ice, the new works van I've yet to test, and the land rover is likely to need de icing twice before it warms up enough to keep it at bay.
