Default Exhaust backbox delete?

I have a 1996 Volvo 940 B230FK auto estate.

I keep bashing the exhaust tailpipe and bending the s bend and backbox outlet.

I am thinking OF getting rid of the backbox and fitting an L shaped piece of pipe to exit behind the rear tyre, ie out the side after the rear tyre.

My questions are:

Would this make it too noisy/ MOT illegal?

I guess as a mod, needs to be declared to Insurance.

Anyone done this and how does it sound?

Would also need a support mounting.

Many thanks. James.

Sound is better removing the middle box rather than the back box. Can you not just alter the tail pipe so it does not catch?

The downpipe, cat and middle box are in good condition.

The back box is in ok condition but outlet bent and is blowing where the over axle pipe joins due to not fitting great as all non genuine/aftermarket.

I could keep the back box and use a 90 degree bend and bring it closer to the rear tyre and out the side.

This would keep it tucked further away from the rear.

Hi.
Yes you would need to disclose this as a modification to your insurer.
Regards,
Dan.

The rear exit pipe fron the back box on mine unbolts and pulls off. Ends up woth a little straight exit. This exit pipe is the one which no matter how tight kept dropping down.

Losing the back box on your car will result in the exhaust swaying around as it will have no support on the final part of where the exhaust has been removed but the sound is no different really

James - just buy a reversing camera instead so you don't keep backing into things!

Where I sometimes park in the Marina car park is a single narrow road and parking 90 degrees to the road with a bank behind. I don't realise I have hit the angled bank and bend the exhaust tailpipe and backbox outlet.

I think the easiest is to refit a new back box hanger as broken one side and refit the tailpipe with new clamp and angle it as high to the bumper to clear kerbs etc.

I carry a lot of stuff in the back so exhaust tailpipe sometimes hits speed bumps if I drive too fast over them.

Camera sounds a good idea!

There you go and your insurance company won't complain either!

Don't mount the rear camera on the tailgate though, you'll kill it. There's a useful little lip on the tailgate seal that you can tuck the rear camera bracket under or as it's waterproof, you could mount it on the bumper and run the cable in under the bumper into the boot area.

Can probably get you some footage from my rear view camera to give you an idea, when you select reverse (if you connect the wire to the reverse lights) it automatically changes to reversing camera mode complete with guidance lines.
You'll also need a 32GB SD card, it works without but it doesn't like it, does some very strange things!
