Default Amazon axle ratio, (Diesel conversion)

Any one out there running an Amazon with a diesel engine?
I'm just about finished swapping in a 306 turbo diesel engine into a four door Amazon. ( using a 5 speed rear wheel drive box)
I think the stock diff' will be about 4:50, so the question is what axle can I use that fits in with out to much bother & that gives me a better ratio?
I reckon more like 3:5 would be more suitable?
thanks

Can't comment on the best diff ratio for your appllication (do you have the gearing / rev band data for your engine & gearbox?), however the highest diff that I know of for an Amazon is 4.1:1, which is the regular saloon diff. All estates and any saloon with a factory fitted overdrive had the 4.56:1 diff.

Btw, what gearbox are you using - Sherpa?

The box is a merc jobbie,( from some unknown small van, which was fitted with the peugoet diesel) I assume it is a 1to 1 fourth & over drive top.
The engine has a 5k red line, but these have a low rpm power band, so the diff needs to be at least 4;1 ( the car is a factory OD gearbox model)

Didn't realise that Merc also used them in rwd. Some of the smaller Sherpas used the Pug 1.9td with the Rover / BL LT77 gearbox.

Depending on the gearbox ratios, it may be easier to attach the diesel to the M41, as well as using a non o/d saloon axle. This has been done before in Holland, but with a VW 1.9td:

That's interesting to read the dutch guy's diesel conversion, & also the Sherpa/LT77 box.

I'll run it as is,hopefully the box is right, it looks in very good order- then take it from there.
Ps, any one have a 4.1:1 diff?

thanks for your help!

The dif from BW35 autoboxes have a 3.91:1 ratio. If you can get one from a 1800E or ES you will also have the benefit of rear disc brakes. The bolt patern for the wheels is different from the ama though. 5x108mm for the disc brake axle instead of 5x114,3mm for the ama drumbrake axle.

You can also source a new crown wheel and pinion to replace your existing. Several ratios available from as low as 3.4:1 up to 5.01:1.
With new bearings expect to shell out in the region of £500

Is that all '60s Volvos with auto boxes or just the 1800 and / or 1800E/ES? I was always under the impression that the auto Amazons used the same diff as the regular M40 manual box, as the top gear ratios were both 1:1.

3.91 only in late autos with disc brake rears. BW35 with 4.1 on Amazon saloons and 4.56 on estates (LHD markets)
A Dutch friend has just fitted an AW70 to his auto combi. This has 3 speeds + OD and effectively gives him a 4.1 as would an M41. This would be a nice conversion on a saloon with a 4.1 axle.
