Default Boot seats

Hi everyone! As the title suggests I am looking for some advice regarding the pop up boot seats some estates have.
I've always liked the thought of having them in my car. A friend of mine has just bought his first 940 which has these rear seats and he has no use or want for them.
Does anyone know what is involved with retrofitting these to another 940?
Thanks

Spanners and sockets!

Maybe a screwdriver too. As far as i'm aware, the 940 is similar to the 740 and they are just a "spanner job" to fit, remove them from the donor car, fit them to your car, job done!

Worth noting that they're only good for small children up to about 45kg if memory serves as well.

Don't forget to transfer the seat belts too!

Hopefully if there's something i've missed, someone will be along to add the missing information but it should be an easy enough job - i think Volvo sold it as a retro-fit option as well.

Page 53 of that pdf shows it as the kit Volvo used to sell.

Not so sure you don't need some cutting and drilling, as well as the spanners and sockets and screwdriver. I had a rear seat in a previous 740 when my son was smaller, and we used it a lot. Recently got another with the current 940 (95MY), and don't need it, so looked at taking it out, but it seems it would leave holes in the luggage area trim and also near the head lining where the seat belt anchors go. Some of the bits and pieces in the photo in the Laird's PDF, a page or two later, may be for extra trim pieces to fill round these holes.

Also, as noted in the PDF, the 940's full-size alloy spare wheel can't be removed while the seat's in place and folded up. This wasn't a problem with the 740. The 940's previous owner had an effective but complex system of loosening some bolts for the lower part of the seat so that it could be lifted up enough to squeeze the full-size spare past it. But tricky to do with a flat tyre in the rain or the dark.

I found an alternative is to remove the lower part of the seat altogether (2 to 4 bolts) then lay it in the space above the spare wheel. That way, to get at the spare, you just lift the seat part out and put it to one side. Just fasten the lower part back when children are using it.

When the rear seat is opened up, it seems to rub against the roller for the luggage cover blind, enough to mark it, not enough to bend it.

Lastly, I've seen online assertions that Volvo's rear-facing seats aren't legal with current child-seat regulations, not sure how to check this. But they do look good and nostalgic. My son and his cousins liked travelling there at a certain age, two children at a time watching the traffic and isolated from the adults in the front.

While i agree they may not meet current regulations, they certainly met (or exceeded) them when they were fitted originally. It's a bit like having a 1961 car that doesn't have front seat belts and retro-fitting the static seat belts from a 1965 version of the same car - they won't meet current regs for a new install but they certainly met or exceeded the regs at the time they were made.

Given the impact protection from Volvos in general i wouldn't have any qualms about using the rear-facing seats - of course if they're there purely for show then the regs won't matter although a fussy MoT tester might think otherwise! If memory serves the rear-facing seats only have static belts although 940s may have inertia reel.

Thanks for the replies, Dave you are very helpful as always 😊. Sounds a fairly simple procedure, as regards to legality I hadn't even considered it. The laws on car seats now are so complicated. However I would imagine that legally they should be ok to use. Like you say really old cars dont even have seat belts...

My Dad fitted a set to our 740 when we were kids. Great fun sitting in the back looking out when going on holiday etc.

Not sure how safe they are in the event of a rear end collision though.

From what I remember it’s a case of removing trim and fitting the seatbelts then bolting the seats in and you are away!

There is no drilling needed. You do need the plastic trims that go around where the seatbelts are mounted.

I used to sit in these seats when I was young and my kids love sitting in them now. Whilst the position is far from ideal in a rear end situation if you look at almost all MPV's etc the rearmost seats are right at the back and no crumple zone for protection.

Nice little read on crumple zones https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crumple_zone

As said ^^^^. The 3rd row of seats fit without any drilling etc.

All you need is the 'alternative' plastic vent fitting to accept the seat belt strap. All the holes/threaded nuts are already built in. You may have to pierce the trim in a couple of places to find them!

Just make sure you get EVERYTHING needed off the donor or you can get stuck. Later 745/earlier 940 seats with arm rests are better than the later ones without.
