Default 1.9 D diagnostic compatibility

Evening,

Feeling a bit daft here, what sort of diagnostic code reader is compatible with a 2002 S40 (1.9 Diesel)? Tried a cheap and cheerful one from Euro Car Parts that suggested generally anything after 1996 would be compatible but no joy, it says Link Error. Tried it on my missus' 2009 Fiat Sedici to check it wasn't a faulty reader, and it works fine.

Borrowed my friend's all singing all dancing Snap On one which of course works fine but not able to justify buying one the same!

Thanks in advance
