FIXED!!! (we hope)
Hi all. Well I gave up and nursed it to a garage that had been recommended by our MOT tester. Anyway, the mechanic heard the problem as I arrived & I left the car with him for the afternoon. Just been back & he said the first thing he did was to disconnect the wiring on the side of the air mass meter. Then he cleaned the whole thing up, re-connected it & it has ticked over perfectly ever since! On the run home it went like a rocket, as it should. Simple as that! The meter was changed four years ago on warranty just after I bought the car from a Volvo Specialist in Fareham, Hants. I can only assume that I must have knocked the connection & loosened it sometime. He said to let it run now & if the problem returns it may need a new meter, but I hope not as this one has only done 30K miles, the original one lasted for 100K.
Fingers crossed. Not sure how much it has cost me, as the garage are sending me the bill sometime next week. What splendid old fashioned service!

Update
Finally got the bill, a little over £50 it works out to. Quite fair I thought. The car is running as good as ever. Reckon it must be sorted!

Hi Paul!
The problem lies with the module on the coil mate. These are all the classic signs..... Also, the four electrode plugs are never any good on a 480 Turbo, just the ES models. The best plugs you can use on the Turbo are NGK BPR7EIX or Denso IW24.These last 30000 miles at least also. So,if you swap coils with one from another Turbo of any age it should cure this problem. Its just this tiny little module riveted to the bracket that the coil sits in thats all I found.Drove me mad for months and was doing exactly the same too.I also bought a new crank sensor when there was no need! Merry Xmas and hope this gets her sorted! Steve

Cheers for that info Steve.
At the moment the car is still running very well. I intend to leave it well alone for the mo' - as in 'if it ain't broke' etc. I've printed off your info & if the syptoms return I will give it a go. Will update this thread if the probs do return. Thanks
