Default 340 Paint/Colour

Hi there

I have just inherited a 340, from 1990. I am hoping to clean it up and use it as a first car however, there is a problem regarding the paint/colour of the car.

The bonnet is fading quickly to a white/pink, the door is fading to a dusty red, the roof has faded as most do, and the rest appears just to need a T Cut.

The bonnet is the most concerning, could it be a cheap re-spray or a regular problem? The car has done 81,000 and is in good nick.

Thanks and kind regards

James

I have seen a number of very faded examples of red 340`s - red is especially prone to fading on any car ( something to do with the pigments I think )and 340`s seem quite bad in this respect.

Whether it`s worthwhile getting the bonnet resprayed really depends on how much you want to keep the car and how concerned you are by it`s appearance - in purely economic terms you could pick up a reasonable 340 ( in a different colour! ) for what this would cost. In addition there would be the problem of matching the new paint to the varied shades on the car.

You could try doing it yourself with aerosols - over such a large area though this would also be quite expensive and it would be hard to get a good finish.

Alternatively you could try and get an unfaded bonnet from a scrappy perhaps a completely different colour wouldn`t look too bad....

How do you know the really bad panels won't be fixed by a T-cut. It may take a bit more effort but will be alot cheaper.

A cheap respray will be £600, and even if you get a good qulaity one it hard to know the characteristics of the paint. Spray painters often havn't done the quality assessment work that manufactures will hve done. It could could be resprays or different sun exposures for the different shades.

Take the bad look of it if you can with T-cut and a wax.

I have been VERY impressed with the volvo aerosols. OK they're £15 a set (a can of colour and lacquer in each set - mine is metallic...base colour may be cheaper, as i think it may be all-in-one?), and you'd need 3-4 sets to do a bonnet...but i have got very good results with it. Have a bit of a practise, and dont forget to mask off!

You're talking about a near-as-dammit paintshop finish for under £50. Can't be bad...

cheers

James
