340 CVT "shifting" problems
My 1990 340 Automatic has a strange problem with the CVT. I hope anyone knowns a solution to this problem.
Sometimes the CVT stays in low "gear" when accelerating, just like it is the special "mountain" mode. When exceeding 40 kph the engines revs are to high and exceeding 90 kph is virtually impossible without turning deaf. It seems this happens most often when I have braked firmly. Sometimes I hear it slip into this mode during braking. During driving is cannot be changed into normal mode, but coming to a complete stop generally helps. Does anybody recognise this problem, or does anyone know what the solution is? Thanks in advance, Han Welten |

RE: 340 CVT
There is a brake pressure switch in the low ratio hold circuit.
This is there to make your transmission change down when braking hard. But it sounds like your pressure switch is sticking. Find the switch (it's on the brake line somewhere) and clean the electrical contacts (it changes down by breaking the circuit). If that doesn't fix it you may need to change the switch. Then bleed the brakes, of course. |

It`s on the side of the master cylinder.

RE: 340 CVT
Thanks for the tip. I will try to locate it and clean it. If it works, I owe you. If you only knew how many "experts" have looked into this problem.
Cheers, Han |

RE: 340 CVT
I had exactly the same problem on my 340, think I've got problems with the manual switch and poss the one on the accelerator as well. After randomly poking bout with a multimeter for a while circuit breaks when you press brake pedal, doesn't seem to break when you press accellerator so think that dud but so long as its always closed thats ok. Took the internal switch out and closed circuit there with some wire coz think the switch is bust. Went for a test drive and apart from running out of petrol :) (whoops !) it seemed to run fine... trying to get this beast back on the road dont wanna scrap it! 62,000 orignal miles!!!(1984 B) Engine starts every time just doesnt change up sometimes :-(
Seems to b ok 4 now.... fingers crossed |

Problem solved
Thanks!
I have found the switch. Unfortunately cleaning it did not work, but shortcircuiting it did. Drove around for a week without any problems, so it seems to be solved. The new switch is ordered at the dealer (couldn't find any used ones in the area), so from tomorrow on my 340 is in top shape again. Han |
