  • VOC Members: There is no login facility using your VOC membership number or the details from page 3 of the club magazine. You need to register in the normal way

hi everybody,

what are the possebilities on changing my 1.4 engine for a 1.7 or even 2.0???

i have a variomatic....

anybody done this before?

and what about changing from variomatic to manual??

Not really a lot of point.

300 series cars are so cheap these days, it would be cheaper and easier (by an extremely wide margin) to simply buy a 1.7 340 or a 2l 360 if you can find a good one.

1.7s have a bit of a reputation for unreliablility compared with the 1.4 I believe, (any owners, feel free to correct me!)but the 2l is a solid old lump

I'd agree its not really worth the effort as a general car improvement. Your talking petrol tank, drive shaft gearbox,diff, engine and gearbox mountings, steering, and even then you wouldn't have all the nice bits of a 360 - colour coded bumpers, thick steering wheel, side trim, black chrome, rev counter, suspension differences, electric windows etc.

360s are very reliable indeed, a good service and basic repairs can make any old negleted one sing. Just look out for bad bodywork.
