Default "Check brake light" - 2001 S60 T S

Before I begin, I'll say that I have searched, and I've seen several threads on this issue, however mine is different.

I am getting a "check brake light" message when I depress the brake pedal. At the back, only the left brake light is not working - I have replaced the bulb to no avail. The threads I've found on here all make mention of this problem occurring with BOTH side brake lights at the back, so I am not quite sure what to do.

Do they each have their own relay? Or is there one for both lights, thus ruling that out as the problem for me? Can anyone shed any light? This is thoroughly annoying me.

Hi Anjow, check the brake light bulb on the other side , as a mechanic its amazing how many time a bulb that works ( but is usually blackened inside ) will bring up a warning.
I don't get this problem with the brake lights on my S80 as they are led's but had the same problem more than once with the other lights.
Regards, Dave.

I'm not sure I follow, I am saying that one of them will not light and the error still displays despite my changing the bulb. However I'll try re-seating the working one too.

Hi Anjow,
sorry I thought you meant you had replaced the bulb and it was now working but you still had the message up, are you sure the replacement bulb was good ? try the other side bulb in that holder to be sure , are you sure its the correct bulb ? there are so many different fittings now its an easy mistake to make.

Having had this problem but with both sides, as far as I know, the upper brake light is on a seperate relay in comparison to the rear clusters. If the bulb is new and still not working, you may want to try the relays.

The easiest way to find out is if you unplug one of the rear door relays and put it in place of your brake light relay. That way you'll know if it is the relays, as it is what I done.

Then checked ebay for the right wattage relay and bought them. (halfords wanted around £11 each relay, IIRC. Ebay was around £2.30 per relay)

Hope this helps

Do you have any info like the part number for the relays by any chance? For £2.30 I might as well have a go. By rear door relay do you mean for central locking?

Also good point about the bulb 25622003, I will try the other side's in it just in case - though both the new one and the one I removed from the left side did look good.
