Default Spring seats?

Chasing a clonking audible at low speed in my V70 2.4 at 193K I've looked at most things.
In terms of what it's like, it sounds like a drop link rattling, but I can't find any movement in them.

I'm now suspecting the front spring seats (original) but there's no issue with steering and when I twist the top retaining nut, everything springs back as it should.

The gap at the top of the strut looks a bit large to me so I took these rather poor photos. If you peer through the gloom you can see the gap.

Opinions welcomed as to whether they indicate anything amiss. I'd rather not take the struts out if there's no concern but it's not that big a job usually.

Thanks

First pic is suspect, but anyway past 100K miles these need replaced. use only Sachs or Rein (CRP). Keep the strut mount bearings and the rest. You may need end links while there, Lemforder or Meyle HD. May as well have a look at the wishbone rear bush with the wheel at full turn
