I can assure you this vehicle is very well covered! The "bare metal look" has seven layers of three different types of clear coat on it - the wheel wells also have seven layers of three different types of paint + rust encapsulator in places - there's also going to be an extra layer of POR15 Urethane applied... ...I'm also considering a matt clear wrap for extra stone chip protection on the front wings, the front and the bonnet. Despite the amount of paint and protection I've put on the vehicle I don't want water sitting between panel joints. Along with the Silent Coat stuff that should be turning up tomorrow I've also got some Dinitrol windscreen sealant - I might use this instead of the Permatex black silicone - I'm not sure what it is like yet at the moment though...

Before you tighten the wing fitting bolts (rear) flow in some Waxoyl, there are better alternatives, into the joint and leave to soak through before tightening them all up. Then do it again and wipe off the excess. Add a bit more wax a couple of times a year, especially if using the car as a daily driver.

I'm not sure if it is true but it certainly feels that 90% of doing up old cars is cleaning The fuel tank looked pretty amazing under all the caked on crud => No external rust (worth mentioning) - looked d - i - s - c - o new once it had been wire brushed to death with the angle grinder and loads of thinner and epoxy prep cleaner. It is now in a coat of epoxy primer (that'll need a good bit of sanding to remove the drips!) The black pantsercoating looks like it will be all that will be necessary for the final finish.

"Seeping wounds". You don't have to go that crazy. Just enough to set-up and seal. Old-timers might just brush on some grease.
The tank has survived amazingly well under the sealant. Lucky you. |

###### Nothing much has happened recently - I'm literally watching paint dry - epoxy undercoating is all very well but I can't speed it along with UV heat lamps cos the UV kills the epoxy. (Flipping boat technology!)

Still watching paint dry
It is now back to being too cold for painting - still mustn't grumble - it has been a fantastic warm summer and autumn so far.
I'm managing to do little bits of paint with help from the UV warmer and a fan heater but it is all a bit touch and go (certainly can't do big bits with this setup) Still I managed to try some POR15 2K Urethane top coat today. Exciting stuff (If you consider how boring it is to watch paint dry) => It is sold as a super tough hard wearing top coat The instructions say you can just brush it on and it will flow so the brush strokes won't be seen... ...I thought - yeah right... ...but - shock - horror - it does actually do what it says on the tin! So it is going to go on the wheel wells as a final layer of ninja stone chip proofing and on places such as the spare wheel well where I suspect chafing might occur.

Nothing much happening this week - half term holiday: I expect to get back with it soon though...
...still I've half a mind on insulated vs noninsulated wiring loom connectors - modern fuse boxes - period correct rear fog lights. Then of course there's combining silentcoat with closed cell foam vs silentcoat with old fashioned horse hair stuff. There's also windscreen sealant vs grease for the wing's vinyl joints. And - heated rear screen vs original non heated. And - exhaust pipe modifications - how to fit a double pipe B20 exhaust to a PV system properly (it was way too tight and then low at the front section - need to make some heat shields for the painted body too) (There's still a lot to do - I've got a feeling I'm not going to be ready for the MOT in November!)

Question:-
I was wondering if anyone out there knows what the originals looked like...
...were the covers in the engine bay [one for the idler arm if I remember correctly and the other for the master brake cylinder] originally galvanised or perhaps some other electro-plating? I'm talking about these bad boys => As you can see they're in satin black at the moment but - hey I do have a can of fake galvanised spray and some Primocon...
