What is the tightening torque for the two bolts which go into the transmission housing?

Smile Stretch bolts

Hi Clan,

Thats interesting, looks like the info i got must be duff, i was told in the past
volvo identified stretch bolts with 'SEMS' on their listings, if you see a bolt where the tightening torque is spec'd plus and angle further does this mean its a pretty good chance its a stretch bolt and a one time use item?

SEMS merely means that the screw or bolt has a built in washer attatched so that it doesnt fall off .
Stretch bolts almost always have a light torque and a final angle tignening ...

Asked the Volvo techs today and they told me all bolts on the lower torque bar (gear box stabaliser thing) are all reusable and definitely not stretch bolts. Just make sure they are all torqued up correctly

Got mine to replace tomorrow

Hope this helps

Volvo's literature says they must be replaced , they have an angle torque which indicates they are use once only bolts they take a big strain you dont want to break the lug off the gearbox when they come loose . tut ...

Smile Mr Haynes says

Interesting, seems theres some dud info out there in volvoworld,

I had a look at the Haynes book, and they quote these torques:

Engine Lower Stabiliser * 50nM + 40 deg.

Lower Torque rod to subframe Nut 65nM + 60 deg.
Lower Torque rod to transmission 35nM + 40deg.

[they use the key of asterisk (*) = do not re-use]

As clan says it seems to follow that anything spec'd with the extra 'angle' tightening is a stretch bolt, so perhaps haynes missed off a * in the listing for the lower torque rod.

What is curious is for the end that mounts to the subframe, the 'bolts' are part of the assembly, so does this imply you can only torque it up once and if you ever need to undo it, you have to replace the whole assembly? or can you somehow obtain the 'bolt' side of this as a separate part ?.

Which bit is the lower stabiliser?
