Default noises

Hi. I have an 02 s60 d5 with 187000 miles on it. It has a strange noise from the belt/ alternator/ ps pump. The noise is not there constantly and it is not the alternator as this has been replaced and just had it checked it again.

Tensioner and idler are also fine.

I suspect the Air con and or the PS.

I have the belt off now and the aircon seems tight and no movement, but whilst the ps has no lateral movement to suggest bearing failure, it does tick as it turns and certainly this may be one of the noises.

Questions. 1. Should the PS pump spin smoothly and silently without the belt but with the fluid system intact.

2. Should I panic and change this pump for a scrapyard item or will it last a few thousand miles more.??

I am going to France next week and will be driving probably 4000 miles...

Regards

Tony

My s60 made a strange noise on tick over and it gradually got worse and worse.Turned out it was the alternator pully was on its way out. Its a clutch type pully that only turns in one direction.

Thanks, But been there done that about 20,000 miles ago.

Since I let the car cool down I can feel a little lateral movement in the pump shaft and there is a little tight spot, so am reasonably confident it is this. I put a squirt of wd40 on it and seemed to fix it temporarily, will see what it is like after the weekend.
