Default Faint high pitched noise

Hi all

I’ve recently bought an ’07 C30 D5 with 36k miles, and it’s making a very quiet high pitched noise. There seems to be no correlation between speed or revs and the noise, and it happens in motion and when stationary. It happens maybe 50% of the time, and seems to build, and then suddenly stop. It’s RHD, and it sounds as though it’s coming from the front right, but I am not certain of that. It sounds either like a belt whirring, and then suddenly going back into place, or air gradually escaping, and then stopping.

Any ideas? I expect it’s probably nothing, but I want to be sure whilst the car is still in warranty.

Does the sound go away if you pull the oil dipstick or the oil fill cap?

Try turning the AC/blowers off and see if the sound stops. (When mine is on it makes a faint high pitched noise).

Nope, but it does make an unsettling gurgling noise!

It's definitely not the air con, it's still there if the air con is off.

So you didnt try pulling the dip stick..

It will eliminate the most common source of engine howl on these newer volvos, spilt diaphragm in the crankcase ventilation.
