Last night I was coming home down the motorway at 70mph when a terrible vibration kicked in. Fearing the worst I moved over to the slow lane and it subsided. After a few more yards it kicked in again and I pulled over thinking that it as all manner over faults from CV joints to bearings that had shredded. Got out, had a look about at the front wheel where the noise was coming from and it looked fine. Jumped back in and the noise was now apparent even at very slow speeds crawling along the hard shoulder. Got out again to get the DOH! moment and saw the rear nearside tyre was flat, cooking and wrecked. Just goes to show how the mind works in situations like this. Today, just back from the garage where I asked for a new tyre and a wheel balance all round to find I needed another front tyre as it was excessively worn on one side. So now, two new tyres and re-balance all round and the car feels much better with no shaking at speed.

After cleaning and lubing all my brakes last weekend I had introduced a click when braking. It was repeatable at any speed and sounded like the pads jiggling about the caliper. It came from the front near-side and to cut a long story short, I bent the caliper spring so that it was holding the piston body tighter. Sorted.

Not quite as sorted as I thought. I had a different rattle (going over bumps) after the above fix which turned out to be the caliper spring was the wrong shape. I took of the other side spring for a direct comparison as I did suspect the spring. I'm not sure where the rubber bush is supposed to sit. Just goes to show how important this little spring is.

While mooching about, I also found the off-side lower ball joint is worn and needs replaced. Has anyone got a good supplier of quality ball joints?

Question

In the picture above, can anyone tell me where the rubber bushes on the clamps are supposed to sit?

I,m not sure but logic would tell me they would sit against the caliper to prevent rattling.

Put my wannabe Koni's on today. Finally cured the rattling! Very happy to drive in silence now! Hopefully this set won't rot away like the last ones. :-\

Changed the brittle and leaky vac lines for some silicone jobbies.

All in all a productive day!

What technique did you use to get the bottom of the strut back into the control arm?

Undo the driveshaft nut and knock the driveshaft back about 20-30mm with a 1/2 extension or similR. (It will only go so far) This stops the CV getting pulled apart when manouvering the hub.

Then its a case of bolting the shock back in at the top then jiggling the hub and shock back together.

Make sure you measure the distance between the shock and the hub (where they bolt together) before disassembly to try preserve the camber.

Today I replaced a worn lower front ball jont and while I was at it, a new drop link. I replaced them with Lemforder and Meyle parts. I had the usual frustration of seized nuts and I was at the point of giving up but continued with some more air hammer action, battering and heat. After carefully tapping on the new ball joint I then screwed it all back together, very frustrating I might add on this car, only to find the CV joint had dismantled itself!!! Evident by the way the CV boot had scrunched up. UUUUUUUUUH! So, off with everything again and then the journal bearing cap and out came the half shaft. It took 15 minutes to get all the balls and the cage back together and re-greased. I re-used the oetiker clamp, which seemed to work pretty well, and then carefully slid the shaft back into place making sure it didn't dimantle this time. Went for a spin, no clicky knocks. Only got the other side to do now.

It's scary the amount of tools you need to do replace on little item.
