Default Towing and Oil Coolers

Hi all,

I've heard a lot of advice, on this forum and elswhere, about fitting an oil cooler to the car if I'm towing with an auto. I tow a caravan (1300 towing weight), about every other week and was wondering if I need to fit an oil cooler.

I have a V70 2.4 (170bhp), 2001, Y reg, Auto. Plus, I am not really good with cars, so an explanation of the oil cooler and where it goes might help!

Cheers...

Hi,

Yes, it is a recommended add-on for anyone who is towing on a regular basis.
You can check out parts from a Volvo dealer for part numbers and prices..

You would also be well advised to check your gearbox oil for condition as it is likely that you'll want to be changing it, if this has not been done before...

Also, have a look at the following topic by Lankytim and his solution to adding an extra oil cooler..
Linky....

Thanks..

I've also just seen a thread that said all V70s 2000 onwards have oil coolers fitted as standard. Does this mean I don't need an aftermarket part, or that the standard cooler is not good enough to handle towing and I need to supplement it...

Cheers...

I towed my caravan all over France and back to Scotland a few times with my V70 2001 auto with no problems. Was told by the dealer that the car needed no extra cooler fitted. Always thought it would be good idea but never had any problems.

Spoke with a dealer yesterday - about a T6 - but he confirmed that it certainly doesn't need an extra cooler - I think he was quite offended that I suggested it did - despite me wanting to tow 1800KG

Hi,

You know... I'd rather be safe than sorry..
The difference between £250 and £2000 is an easy choice..

And I don't care how offended the dealer is.. How many times have dealers offended customers with their ridiculous prices!!!

Anyone know where this all stands against a warranty?? If the car should be able to tow a set weight, you do so, and the gearbox fails surely the warranty should pay out??

Any ideas?
