Default Squeak sound changing gear

This sounds strange but today my car started to make a rubbery squeaking sound changing to 1st 3rd or 5th gears. The sound comes from the console by the gear stick. Any ideas?

I had exactly the same issue on my '09 V70 D5. The noise was intermittent, I would start the car in the morning and it was quiet, then it would come several minutes later when reducing gear to take a turn. Asked at the dealer once what it could be but they wanted the car for longer to 'investigate' so I gave up.
In December last year it all stopped, no squeak since.

Probably the insulating material that separates the gear lever and linkage from the underside of the car. Providing it doesn't feel stiffer (ooer) than before it's probably nothing to worry about

I had a similar noise which turned out to be the gear lever gaiter moving within the centre console trim. A bit of card wedged at the end was a temporary fix. The dealer "fixed" it at my service and 6 months later it dropped through the console-turns out they took it out, glued some foam on the sides and put it back but must have broken the plastic frame under the leather doing so. Still I now have a nice new snug fitting sports leather one supplied under warranty :-)

Thanks for the responses. i'll get it into volvo as my car was only serviced a month ago. Its really strange it only happened moving the gear stick forwards 1,3,5 and not back...

I've had this today, exactly the same issue only 1st, 3rd and 5th gears.

I've fixed it by taking off the side panels of the gear stick console and spraying some silicone grease down the gear cable sheath. This improved the squeak, but I could still feel it so I got a mate to push the stick into 3rd and neutral repeatedly.

I traced the remaining squeak under the bonnet, the gear cables have a ball and socket type linkage, a liberal coating of lubricant while the stick was shifted soon stopped it.

The linkage system is on the right hand side of the engine, near the bell housing. If someone is moving the stick while you look, you'll soon find it.

Hope that helps anyone affected by this irritating noise.

Had the same on my v60 whenever it went below 3 degrees. It’s the gear selector cable in the sheath at the gear stick end creaking. Tried everything to sort it and eventually sorted it using silicone grease and spraying it down the inside of the sheath inside the car.

If you disconnect air mass meter then air filter box cables will be visible use while grease on both cables where rod goes into plastic this will cure remember do not have ignition on and no codes will get stored..

Hi
I have exactly the same problem.. did you get it sorted? I removed console side panels and sprayed silicone grease on the cable rods/plastic housing but it still happens intermittently. I may have to find the air mass meter and air filter box cables then...
