Default Fuel consumption more than expected

My S40 2.0L diesel is two weeks old. I have done 700 miles of which 600 was mainly motorway at 70mph with cruise control on.

The average consumption has been 38.2 mpg.

Rolling road extra urban is listed at 62mpg for this car.

Comments anyone?

I've got the 2.0D SE Sport and have had it for five months. It's done 13000 miles and i've never got the Average Fuel Cons above 38.9mpg!!

Kings Volvo in Southampton told me i was driving too fast!!!

I agree with you 100%. I used to have an Octavia which regularly did 55-60 mpg on motorways, driven sensibly. I now have a 1200 mile V50 and am getting 38 mpg on the same journeys. All the blurb in the sales literature states extra urban consumption of 61.4 and a combined figure of 49.6. I would be delighted to be doing that....

Also, why is it that I can only get about 40 litres in the tank, when again the lit says either 55 litres or 52, depending on whether you're reading the drivers handbook or Volvo brochure?

I'm never away from the garage....

Not just me then (V50SD) coming up to 7500 (since Sep 05) and its all I can do to get it above 45mpg. On motorway put cruise on around 70 and things start to get much better but hey any car even petrol starts to get good then! I've heard than when 'run in' it may get better, perhaps around 10000 miles. Have started to work the engine a bit more (ok thrash it) in a hope to improve things.

Anyone noticed differences with fuel type i.e. supermarket v big names?

It seems worse with a smaller tank.

Worst of all I had a Citroen Xantia before and it was all I could do to get it below 45mpg...
