Default stiff throttle

first of all, check the bar that the throttle pedal pivots on is lubricated,a spray with wd 40 or similar will not go amiss, there is also a connecting bar from the end of this bar to the throttle sensor, this has a ball type linkage at each end, apply a little grease to it.

In my experience of a stiff throttle if you spray 3-in-1 oil or similar onto the spring and around this on the throttle body it helps a lot, but it could be time for a new throttle cable esp if it is stretched, because it sounds like it keeps sticking internally, although first do check it is not catching on anything under the dash. If you remove the cover underneath the dash above the pedals and then there are 4 screws I think one is hidden under a cover to remove the lower dash bit and access is fairly ok, you can see the cable come through.

Changing the cable is quite easy, a new one is £22 + VAT from volvo. Lift up the coolant expansion tank to get access to the grommit in the bulkhead, the easiest way to free it is to prise it off from the engine bay which breaks the clips holding it in, then push the new one fully home til it clips. Pedal connection you just lever the clip out from where it is on the pedal and lift it out. New one goes on and push home to clip in. Throttle body connection you hold the throttle body open and lift/lever out the wire from the cut-out hole thing it is attached to and remove the clip holding the outer cable in place, pull it back and remove the whole thing. Fit new one as you remove old one so you get it all in the correct route. Adjust new one by turning the grey piece up and down the outer cable near throttle body. Correct cable length is when the cable is as taught as possible without opening the butterfly valve at all, when throttle pedal is in rest position. Check when pedal fully pushed in the throttle butterfly is fully open (i.e the arm hits the stop).

Note the above applies to manual gearbox, is diff. on auto due to kickdown capability.
