Default 480 1.9 16v

Hi, I dont know if this one has been asked before but forgive me if it has.

The Renault 19 16v shares the same injection system as my 1.7 ES 480 K-reg. Can this engine go in without any modification? Can the standard gearbox mate to it?

The thing is I'm turning my 480 into a hill climber and really need some decent power. Are there any other suitable engines out there??

Thanks.

To start with Scott, you could try the turbo version of your engine as fitted to 480 Turbos. It has a small turbo unit which gives no lag and a surprising amount of urge. Then there is the 2-Litre version, which I think is the 1.9, but I don't know if they turbo'd it.

All the best, Peter

Hi.

I believe i've come across this kind of thread somewhere before. Yes, you can drop the engine in, but all the engine management system has to come out and be replaced with the system from the Renault. It's not as simple as it sounds (so i remember!). Not sure about the gearbox though.

Peter's got a good idea. You could drop a 1.7 Turbo lump in-these are quick-around 129hp standard if i remember. Volvo did make a 2.0 (1998cc) engine, but no Turbo version. Why not get in touch with Dave Slater (davebslater(uk))-he can be found here-check the User profiles. He does work on Volvo's-im sure he could offer you some advice on what the best thing to do would be. The Volvo lumps are well reliable, i would def. consider something down this route before you think about dropping the Renault 19 lump in.

Later,
Dan M
