Every great people gatos end up messing up I was having this arguement, with someone in the lounge the other night not all the British empire was bad we also did a lot of good amongst the f ups.

I've always seen the history of Greece in the Bronze age as a laboratory experiment into different ways of living and organising a society. They literally tried everything, at both a personal and a state level.
Nowadays we have reams of information about what happens if you have extensive personal liberties, and if you have none, when you allow demagogues to rule or when you use ostracisation to control citizenship. The Greeks had none of the info available, so they tried it all out, and wrote the books to inform the future.
