Default Starter problems

Hi,all back and running except a problem with start motor. When I turn ignition on the motor "whirrs" round but doesn't engage the ring, takes two or three attempts to get it to engage and start. Recently converted from 6 to 12 V. Would this be a function of the 6 v start motor over reacting or the solenoid not working correctly. Any ideas?

This happens more when engine is cold than hot.

My guess would be that the solenoid is not engaging, and when is hot it expands just enough to work.

I had this problem with my B16B back in the 60's. Was on 6 volts. The solenoid, although designed for 6v could be a bit tardy if the battery was low but that also caused, over time, the plunger making poor contact with the contacts. This meant arcing and corrosion build up. It worked OK for a while after I cleaned things up but in the end I fitted a new solenoid. It was a part you could order back then. The solenoid doesn't come off easily but I'd try and service it and the motor to make the best of what you have. If you painted the block when you rebuilt the motor make sure that the block/starter joint hasn't any paint on it as that is what earths the starter. Poor earths always bad news.
