where in uk are you? You can find the vida software online for free, which will help. Its the dice adapter that will cost you.

seems google changed default sharing options, try again.

Thanks for sorting the links. I'm near Lincoln.

Default low boost

Not sure how far you have got with the fault finding after reading all the threads but i've had the same issues with a C30 1.6d

If you start the engine and look at the waste gate linkeage the lever should be pulled fully down approx 15mm of movement. Turn the car off and look again and when the whine of the engine stops the actuator will release the vacum and the linkeage will raise to the upper position.

Vacum leaks are fairly common so maybe buy a cheap hand tester and for circa £17 off fleabay and see if the actuator is not leaking and that there is a vacum available.

Boost leaks are also common and mine was at the return pipe connection to the EGR. remove the silicone bush gasket that sits inside the plastic connector and look for splits. I removed the entire intercooler and hoses and pressure tested in in a water bath at 2 bar, and as stated above smoke testing isn't very effective

The fault code i got indicated high boost pressure but i think it was really means boost pressure not reached as i was told that if the is a difference of more that 200kpa the ECU throughs up a fault and you get anti skid and reduced performance message on the dash.

My anti skid service still comes on sometimes but at least the car has boost

Thanks. I regret not checking the waste gate linkage after I reinstalled the turbo and before I put the heat shields back. I was about to take them back off this morning but it's blowing a hooley with a little rain so it's not happening. I've ordered a vida/dice kit this morning which I know ultimately may not be the panacea but I've lost the will to live with the job for now e.g. pressure-testing everything.

Was that the return pipe from the TCV to the EGR? Where was the gasket exactly?

Default FIXED! Thank dog.

After whingeing this morning about losing the will to live/blah blah, I decided to pull up my big girl's pants, get out and remove the heat shields again to expose the waste gate actuator & see what was what. I was actually delighted to see that it was not operating after engine start which narrowed the issue down nicely. It was manually travelling quite freely and remained down when I removed the vacuum pipe and plugged the nozzle with my finger.

Went underneath, removed the TCV (quite easy once I located the bloody thing) and checked the vacuum pipes to and from it which seemed ok as far as I could see. Power was getting to it too.

Not having a tester, I checked eBay for a replacement TCV and found one for sale 20 minutes away from me for £13. Collected it this afternoon, fitted it, started the car and VOILA - the waste gate actuator jumped to attention and went off after switching the engine off. Buttoned everything up, ran a quick generic diagnostic check (no errors) and took it for a drive. It is a new car.

Many thanks to you three guys whose input is much appreciated.

Marvelous, its nice when people post when they have sorted it, so many people dont bother coming back to complete their threads! I keep seeing wastegate mentioned isnt the 1.6d VNT without wastegate, or is the term used interchangeably ?

My next job is a leaking driveshaft seal

Good luck then. I'm back to my MG ZT to start the cruise control retrofit. Wiring & electrics is much more my thing. Thanks again.
