Default XC90 Major Oil Leak - Crank Seal ?

My wife's XC90 has sprung a leak - enough to loose a couple of litres in 20 miles.

A service light came on and it restricted power (presumably there is some sort of low oil sensor ?)

It was below the minimum but not by much.

I removed the engine tray and there is oil coming out between the engine and gearbox so I presume the crank seal has gone - which seems strange on a 50k engine.

Is this a known problem or could it be something else ?

Thanks

TBH unless its free (which I'd doubt on an 03) I wouldn't consider going to a dealer, all they know how to do is charge.

I'll get it recovered to my local garage on Monday.

Called a couple of inde's and they say its not a common problem and want around £550 but my local garage will do it for £300 so that's where its off to.

It was the crank seal a mere £320 to fix it.

I'm rapidly going off XC90's.

What was the oil level like before the seal went?

Close to full I check oil regularly.

Depending who you ask the crank seal was a known problem and there was an 'upgraded' seal brought out apparently.

Do you check when the engine is cold as Volvo recommend?

Roy

Hot or cold, never noticed a difference, never had to top it up either.

There should be a noticable difference. Odd. The oil level can read OK hot but be overfilled. Often happens when the car is serviced. The engine still holds quite a lot of oil when it's drained hot. Fill with the quantity in the manual, let the engine get cold and you find it significantly overfilled.
