Awd in reverse?
All. Got a v70xc 00 plate.
My question is does the awd work in reverse? I know the awd system runs all 4 wheels as I've had it up on the 2 poster lift in the garage. I'm also sure it's kicked in when driving sideways up onto a wet grassy bank to park the car I was reversing up a steep tarmac drive with a grassy muddy area to the side. I decided to attempt to park on the grassy area but the car would not reverse up the hill. I had the front pass wheel in the mud and drivers on the tarmac. The awd did not kick in. Is this correct?

The earlier AWD's upto 02ish were mechanical rather than electronic and used a viscous clutch system in rear of propshaft area,
They also had a LSD fitted to rear and used the ABS system to brake the front wheels in the event of loss of traction, In theory you shouldn't have got stuck but never actually have one on soft stuff so carn't comment how they perform

It was a very steep slope that even on tarmac required over 1/2 throttle before moving slowly back up the slope.
Now one side of the car in the dirt or wet grass and boggy mud while the other on tarmac. No power seemed to be transfered from the spinning wheel in the mud to the non spinning wheel at the front on the tarmac Does an X plate v70xc have traction control? I have no button to turn it off on the center console that are shown in the handbooks I must admit I've not had much change to play with the awd system. Ever since buying the car we've not had any snow where I live.

The car has AWD which is not the same as locking the third diff or having limited slip differentials.
The power will go to the wheel with least resistance (the spinning wheel) on the axle as this is how a standard differential works. Modern Volvo's rely on traction control to stop the wheel spinning. I had it on my '04 plate v70 but I can't say if an X reg would have traction control, sorry

AWD is not for snow! any car with half decent winter tyres on will out perform a car with AWD (unless it too has winter tyres on)

The Sid-Vicious coupling does NOT work if a car is stationary. It needs to be moving first.
Had a video to prove it and Volvo paid me to go away. There were several threads on the US Volvoxc.com some years ago (probably now deleted) saying much the same. Methinks it's something to do with the design of the coupling; both ends have to be rotating for the torque to be transferred from to back. |
