Default Rear brake / handbrake

On my s40 how does the rear brake / handbreak work?

Basically my hand break is pretty poor, I've tried slackening it off pumping the break an re tightening to the point where is quite a struggle to apply it but I can still push the car along? Does the rest brake disc have a drum with internal pads that are for the handbrake? Does anyone know where I can get replacements if so?

The hand brake and foot brake both use the same pads. A separate brake drum doesn't exist anymore...

You pull the hand brake and twist (though that movement) the brake cylinder out.

sounds like you have a dodge caliper, what daim is trying to describe is the hand brake is mechanical and the food brake hyudraulic, but use the same equipment. when you pull the hand brake it, effectly turns a cylinder with a blob on it when it turns it pushes the piston in the caliper out against the discs (where as hydraulic pressure on the foot brake does the same, its why you can feel a bit of give in your brake pedal when you pull on the hand brake with the foot brake applied.
now several things can cause a pish hand brake, you could have stretched cables, or the cylinder in the caliper can wear down so it doesnt apply as much pressure, and the caliper can seize or all of the above. and it can happen on both or on one side.
Focus estates are bad for their rear calipers, for some reason it was almost always the n/s/r on estates, and o/s/r on hatch backs. (probably just appeared worse on the estates as they are rear discs as standard on all engines but only the 1.8 and up hatch backs got them, so more common)

slacken the bolt that adjusts the handbrake cables under the centre console. remove calipers and pads and rewind the caliper pistons back in. reassemble calipers and pump the break pedal to push the pads back onto the discs, tighten the bolt under the centre console until the slack is taken out of the cables. this should reset it.

remember the correct way to apply the parking brake is apply the brakes with the footbrake first , hard then with the pressure still firmly applied pull up the lever . So your foot is doing the hard work not the lever .

How do I rewind the caliper piston back in?

Alternatively a small piece of wood that'll cover the piston, and a G clamp.
