I cant see how suitably sized steel wheels could possibly affect the operation of the 4 wheel drive system.
However, steel wheels for these cars are not common and would be difficult to find. I would suggest that your best course of action would be either to have your existing wheels refurbished, at a cost of £30 - £50 per wheel, or buy some good second hand ones - these are often being offered for sale in this forum. The problem with your wheels is not that they are porous, it is that there will be corrosion around the seat where the tyre sits, and that is porous. Bead blasting and repainting is the permanent cure for this.

Just to add, we see many cars with leaking wheels. Tyre centres usually grind the rust/bubbling down and apply a bead sealer to the inside of the rim that provides a fully air tight seal once the tyre is fitted.

had the same issue with my wife's old saab. Old tyres, and leaky rims due to corrosion. Had all the wheels refurbed locally - Mint Alloys - (also swapped tyres for Michelin Cross Climates from Black Circles) 3 years ago. Had no problems since, and they still look perfect.
