Default 740 1990 GL Random Stalling

My 1990 740 GL will randomly switch off while driving and then in order to restart the car have to wait about 10 minutes before it fires right up again. This issue began extremely infrequently but recently it has started to do it nearly every time I drive the car. All the lights on the dash turn on when the car stalls also.

Any advice as to what the issue could potentially be would be greatly appreciated.

Believe it is the standard 2.3L, 4 cylinder, petrol automatic engine.

That makes it a B230?????????

B230E?

B230F?

B230K?

B230FB

B230FK?

B230FT?

Carb? K-Jetronic mechanical injection? LH2.2 Jetronic injection? LH2.4 Jetronic injection? Turbo? N/asp?

Any of those can be hooked up to the auto box plus there's the 16v options as well which would be a B234x or B234xy

All different engines and while there are some common faults to the range, it could easily be an engine-specific fault or be more likely to be one fault than another.

Look on your timing belt cover, should have the engine code there.

I think the GL was still carb that year...?

The 16 valve units were about from '89, but were only found on GLE trim and higher.

It will be lh2.2 or 2.4

The dash lights come on because when the engine stalls the key is in the ignition position, so this is nothing to worry about.

Pull the fuel pump relay out (big white one behind the ash tray) and pop the cover off, see if it has any dry solder joints or cracks. It sounds to me like the common problem of the relay starting to pack up as it gets hot and a crack opens up.

Or if you have a spare one that you know works fit that, a seasoned 7/900 series owner carries a spare relay in the glovebox.

The 740GLT 16v was in the UK, not sure about Australia though.

If it's a B230F it's LH2.4 Jetronic.

It will be LH2.4 if it's a B230F and agreed, most likely cause will be the fuel pump relay.
