Reverse Turning Wheels Judder
OK, so I seem to be getting all the issues currently.
When reversing and wheels are turned, they feel like they are jumping/skipping etc. Is this the tracking or toe in/out causing this? It's fine in a straight line. Car drives nice and straight, doesn't track of course. My other thought is in the past an incorrect sided balljoint has been fitted? Anyone had this before? |

Is it on full lock when that happens?

It's a feature of big old Volvo's, it can be exacerbated by worn suspension but it is completely normal in my experience with them. |

Seems just a characteristic of these big old Volvos, but worth just checking suspension bushes etc. Just in case. Cheers Steve |

I think it's largely an inevitable consequence of the cars' having such small turning circle - the front wheels turn through a wide angle, so scrub a lot on the road at full lock.
There's a particular tyre supplier I used to go to who had a large flat area painted with that special shiny garage floor paint. It was impossible to stop the wheels making an incredible screeching when manoeuvring, both forwards and backwards. I used to enjoy showing off by making a complete U-turn inside the garage, which made a noise like the sound effects from a car-chase film . It will also be exagerated by any suspension and steering joint wear, or slight wobble in the wheel bearings. |

I'm also going to say it's normal and gets significantly worse when it's cold and on particular surfaces.
I replaced every single bush and replaceable component as part of the resto. When I first reversed it out of the drive onto the street it did this quite violently when I reached full lock. It was really cold that day and there were some stones and frost on the ground. I tried to replicate it one day and couldn't, so I forgot about it. Last week reversing out of a tight parking space it did it again. Frosty ground, full lock. I think it's safe to ignore. |
