Default Continuing ABS / DSTC woes

2003 XC90 D5. I’m have a ongoing issue where I am getting an ABS warning or the yellow traction control indictor is lighting on the dash when driving. VIDA has never shown anything else other than BCM-0031 Left Rear wheel sensor faulty.

When the problem occurs the car normally looses all power and can only be drive at about 5mph. I can normally override this by hitting the DSTC button – Spin Control off. However on occasion (noticed it yesterday) there is vibration as the ABS cuts in and attempts to control the wheels – yesterday- The right rear wheel got hot yesterday as the brakes were applying when driving – presumably trying to compensate for the fault condition on the left.

I have replaced the left rear sensor twice now and the problem seems to go away for a while. Granted the sensors used were not OEM – last one was a FEBI Bilstein.

I saw a post somewhere that suggested the hub bearing may need to be replaced which is what I plan to do next although I can see nothing wrong with the current one – and no visible damage to the ABS sensor when removing them.

My question is that whilst I’m trying to resolve this intermittent problem is there anything more I can do to disable the ABS / traction control to avoid the other trickery cutting in. Its bad enough driving the car normally, but I need to tow my caravan this weekend and it gives no confidence at all, when you either have no power or the brakes are applying by themselves!

Wheel bearings can cause this, I've done several rear wheel bearings on the P2 and P3 platform which have subsequently cured these issues - in once case after the dealer diagnosed a faulty driveshaft on a XC90 at £880 to replace...

I would do rear wheel bearing next.

If you have VIDA - try graphing live wheel speed data - it will show you the one that is being inconsistent and causing the traction control to kick it. It may not be the one that's being braked....
