According to those i am well over the caravan clubs recommended weight of 85% but as i said so far not had any problems. The car I think is more than capable of towing 1500kg and feels pretty solid when towing. I have also got a converted caravan chassis which i am planing on putting my vintage tractor on this will be pushing close to the limit but just to make sure i cant get done ill be putting on the local scrap mans weighbridge with a printoff.

Personally I am not keen on trailers converted from caravan chassis' - rather a proper engineered and designed to do the job car transporter trailer.

Depending on size and weight - they don't cost a fortune new or used.

As previously mentioned, the 85% figures are not a legal measurement, they are simply caravan club suggestions.
I have no experience as yet of towing with my V70, but I have been towing trailers for years with other vehicles, and one of the questions that kept arising was that of what you can legally tow on various licenses.
If you passed your test before '97 you are fine, anyone afterwards theoretically has a maximum of 750kgs, although if the train weight of the towcar and trailer is within 3500kgs that would allow you to tow more the 750kgs, but it obviously must be a braked trailer. Also the MAM of the trailer must not exceed the unladen weight of the towcar.
If you want to tow more than that (with a post 97 license) you need to take a category B+E test. I took mine a couple of years ago. That allows you to tow a 3500kg trailer behind a vehicle up to 3500kg MAM, 3500kg trailer being the maximum you can have with over-run brakes. Any trailer over 3500kgs must have coupled brakes, and this is a rarity until you get to LGV's.

Well i fall into the new licenses and i did look for a transporter but couldnt find one with a low enough weight rating to be legal, this trailer only cost £180 with a gross weight of 1100kg, made of decent marine ply and has proper mounts welded to the chassis. This isnt a normal lash upthat you would expect the previous owner built it to move his pride and joy kit car about. i bought it knowing i wanted to put the tractor on so wouldnt have gone for any old crap, cheapest car transporter i saw was £600 and was well oversized for my needs. Saying that i am still looking if a small decent one comes my way.

Fortunately I have an "old" licence - which means mine 600kg empty, max 3000kg - is a good choice.

Right tool for the job and all that
