oil capacity
3.8 litres incl filter b4184sj engines
5.4 litres incl filter 5.6 litres incl filter diesels the difference between max& min mark with petrol is approx 1.9 litres and in diesel engines is 2.0 litres according to the service book.i would suggest putting so much in the 1.6 and allow the 1.9 litres to top up.i never top mine right up as it burns the oil.so i have mine at just below max. our guru friend skyship may come along soon with all you need to know about oil.or do a search, and scroll through many pages.lol

If you want to know what oil to use, it's Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. You can buy this from Eurocarparts for a very good price. It's a very good fully-synthetic oil. The base stock is made from gas rather than crude oil. It also has good engine cleaning properties. When I first got my Volvo (2003 V40 1.8L petrol non-GDI) I changed the oil and filter and then changed the oil and filter 1000 miles later. I now change the oil every 5000 miles and the filter every 10,000 miles.
HTH Tim PS I just throw the 5L container full into the engine. I use a Pela type vacuum oil extractor. About .5L of the old oil stays in the engine; mostly in the top end. I find that after extraction, pouring in the full 5L brings the level to the correct level. Use appropriate care of course pouring in the oil the first time until you confirm that you don't overfill. It does depend exactly how much it takes depending on if you change the filter or not but I find I never need to buy a container and a bit. Last edited by flyingtech55; May 1st, 2016 at 17:57. Dont wish to hijack the thread but my question is directly related to OP. My car has a full Volvo service history, what oil is it likely to have had for its previous 12 years?
I did say "likely", not expecting anyone to be psychic :-)
