Unhappy 1991 Volvo 740 Overdrive constantly on

Hello everyone! I'm having a annoying problem with my volvo 740, as the title says the overdrive is constantly on and I can't turn it off. It makes the drive loud and slow. please help!

Many thanks!

Manual or auto? What engine, what gearbox?

Probably a B230F with an automatic box as the OP is from Ottawa. I would have expected the lock-up to reduce the engine revs and hence noise; or is it stuck in 2nd?

As the good Laird says, some more details on the mechanicals would be helpful.

I was thinking similar about the auto box but more along the lines of the orange overdrive arrow warning light on the dash being permanently on. This would prevent engagement of 4th (overdrive) although the torque-converter lock-up may still operate.

If the lock-up clutch has seized in the on position, torque multiplication won't happen making it slower and likewise if the unidirectional clutch in the TC has seized although that can often have the effect of making it more lively and quieter.
