It always starts.... but won't stop???????
Hi again all....
The good news is that the £150 F reg 240GL flew thru its MOT without having anything done to it !!! My insurance has come down by over 60%, I can't overtake anything and I get over 20mpg whatever I do ! In addition to this I can get all my tools, ladder and 3m lengths of conduit inside the car without folding the seats down....... I am complete ! HOWEVER..... On several occasions the car just won't switch off, I pull in, knock her into neutral, turn the key to off, the battery lamp comes on really dimly but everything else keeps on running perfectly, radio, lights & heater !! Has anyone any ideas at all what could be wrong ? Jim, '96 855-R (The Flying Wardrobe) '88 245GL (The Melamine Wardrobe) |

RE: It always starts.... but won't stop???????
Jim,
There are several possibilities for this problem. Ignition switch faulty, unlikely, but worth checking. A fault in a component that has both ignition and non ignition controlled supplies to it. As an example, I once had this problem, (not on a Volvo) and after much head scratching it turned out to be a short in a stop/tail light bulb, the engine would not stop with your foot on the brake pedal when the side lights were on! This gives you the idea of the sort of problem you are looking for. The other thing, and, on a 240, the most likely, is a short in the wiring harness, the earlier 240s were fitted with the infamous bio-degradable wiring harness which sheds its insulation when subjected to engine compartment temperatures. This as you can imagine causes all sorts of interesting problems! The most likely spot is where the wiring from the alternator and oil warning light/guage go into the loom together. Another problem on the estates is broken/shorted wires inside the flexible conduit between the tailgate and body. You really need a wiring diagram and patience to sort this out. Best of luck, let us know the result, Colin. |
