I wonder if anyone has had a simialr problem?

My 1986 240 does not start easily once it has stood overninght.
Took it to a garage and he replaced the coil, a thing behind the battery which he said controled the voltage to he coil.
Had all teh injectors cleand.
Tuned the enging.
It ran like a top when it waw finished.
Took it home and he next day it wouldn't stary again the next morning.
The cold start injector was replaced with a second hand unit as well, so it should be OK we think. Is there something that is being missed?

Thanks Phil

Might be worth checking your fuel pressures Phil.

Have you got a Haynes manual for your car? Even if you don't use it yourself the wiring digrams are useful (essential really) for your mechanic.

Beardy is right about the fuel pressures. But also the 'fuel pump relay' is prone to fail. Quite notorious and can produce very puzzling symptoms because it's linked to igniton system as well as controlling whether or not your fuel pump works. A new one costs about £40 from a Volvo dealer but about £10+p&p from: http://www.volvopartsuk.co.uk which was where I got a couple from. In my experience it pays to have a spare then, if you have problems, you can rule out (or in) the F/P relay just by changing it.

Another fairly common problem is the auxiliary air valve that can stick. It should be open for cold starting. It can be cleaned and made to work OK again although Haynes says get a new one.

There's also the thingy that controls the start injector. I think it's called a 'thermal switch' and if it's cold then it makes the start injector work. Don't know where it is on a 240 (mine's a 260), but on the 260 V6 it's a fairly small thing screwed into the waterpump housing, with two wires going to it. If you have a wiring diagram, then the start injector can be tested by making it switch on even if the thermal switch is u/s.

Good luck.

It could be the fuel pump itself sticking. About once every 2 months mine refuses to start if it has been left standing for a day or two. A thump with the fist on the pump, it suddenly clicks into life, and gives no more trouble. I suppose it really needs replacing, but is liveable-with.
Might be worth a try anyway.
