That's mental!!

Surely you set the cruise at 56mph and drove around Holland for 1350 miles!

I know its bonkers.

After filling up I hit the M25 & probably averaged 60 mph. I took the photo when we reached our destination (an hour and a half/105 miles later)

I don't know how accurate the computer is. I completely brimmed the tank though - This might have confused it a bit.

I've had a similar figure as mentioned in comment #20 of this thread.
Never actually broke the 1000 miles in reality but got very close several times.

My V70 Euro 4 D5 185 auto consistently does 32mpg mixed urban and rural driving on a commute and 28mpg towing a 1300kg+ caravan and one passenger with seats down and loaded with gear. Not fantastic but it's consistent and drives like new after nearly 100K miles. I knew what I was buying and love the car so I live with it. I'd probably be able to squeeze 500 miles out of a tank not towing.

I didn't realise that the Auto version made such a dent in the economy.

These figures are more normal for petrol cars.

They're old diesels that weigh about the same as a well laden car ferry and handle on a similar level too... probably safe to say most owners have them for the simple reason they are massive, cheap and will return decent MPG figures. Doubt many were bought for their driver focused credentials and handling dynamics to be honest. And yes, the thread is about real world MPG...

However, I digress...

I echo what others have said and remain impressed with their ability to return good figures, even when driven with a little more care free attitude. Mine isn't exactly cherished, works hard for it's money and whilst maintained it's run on whatever fuel is there at the time and yes, I also know the computer likes to lull you in to a false sense of security but I've racked up nigh on 300 miles this week and still on about 3/4 of a tank though as said before, they will swallow more than the stated 70 litres from empty so that'll skew things a bit and would explain why the bottom half of the tank goes quicker than the top.

I'm still pushing up towards 600 miles to a tank and that's mixed driving... some day it does a 4 miles commute each way, some days it's doing 200 miles of motorways so I really can't fault it and nor do I sit at 56mph, slip streaming HGV's. Pretty sure with the tyres pumped up, a coat of wax and be having a light lunch combined with favourable road conditions, 800 miles would be attainable from a single tank. I usually tip a bottle of Toolstation own brand diesel treatment in every couple of tanks and it does seem slightly smoother, can't say I've noticed an MPG increase however but then again I don't do a set route day in, day out to judge it.

Either way, it's a nice way to offset the R and it's insatiable thirst for Momentum and it's ability to consume it at a gallon every 20 miles when pressing on.

I get typically 650 to 700 miles over mixed driving in my V70 D5 manual euro3, but I fill up at about quarter tank as I dont like letting it get too low. Trip computer normally shows 51 to 52mpg over a tank but calculated every time to a reasonably consistent 45mpg, which for mixed driving I'm delighted with.

I've had 62mpg showing over long motorway trips cruise set to an indicated 70 but I've never done a full tank of motorway miles to see what can be done.

In my limited experience I believe this to be a fairly accurate summary of the average S60 / V70 D5

Wow, neither did I...

This is what I thought too, is the auto really that bad or is there something else at play here? Perhaps one man's "mixed urban/rural" is another's "heavy traffic and steep twisty back lanes"...

Whatever the case, I would have expected maybe a 15-20% penalty with an autobox at worst?
