Dash binnacle, the thing behind steering wheel that lies a lot, all gauges have a mind of there own, while they read something it doesnt actually correspond to anything.

And door pockets that are so brittle......

No need to get too excited, was teasing - I have three 1986 740s here, all have perfect door pockets, and the fuel guage only fibs occasionally.

Give a 32 yr old car some respect !

Fits a mutlitude of Volvos!
Well, new clutch arrived today, set to, got gearbox out, took about 25 mins! 1 of fastest ive ever done, got the still hot clutch off flywheel, opened my box of shiny new bits and what do you know, wrong 1! My car has a dog dish and not a flat flywheel. Lots of choice words. Hopefully another clutch should be here by tuesday.

Dog dish - dual mass flywheel?

I thought they didn't come in until much later on the 940s, if so it suggests you've had a replacement engine and/or box at some point.

Surprised your hounds didn't want the flywheel filled with food!

Nope, not DMF and yes dished. Standard for 240, 740 and 940 with M47 gearbox.

Being the B230 its a 228mm clutch

Right, i'm confused now - the way i've always understood things gearboxes were :

M45 - 4-speed
M46 - 4-speed + O/D
M47 - 5-speed

Going all the way back to the 145 i had when i was 17, the Volvo handbook depicted the M45 and M46 - the M47 hadn't come along when it was printed.

Also as mentioned in my post above, the Haynes Book of Fantasy reckons the B230E has an 8.5" (216mm) with all other models using a 229mm/9" clutch.
To me that is counter-intuitive, the B230E being the most powerful (n/asp) engine available should theoretically have the largest clutch.
As such it would make more sense that the others had the 8.5"/216mm and the B230E had the 9"/229mm clutch.

All my other Volvos since that 145 have been auto (except the 360GLT and a very short-term 440Li that isn't really a proper Volvo IMHO) so i've never needed to go anywhere near a clutch on a Volvo.
