Video here: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAb9p8Wph-M About £40 for 4 litres of ATF from dealer. Did 2x sump dumps on mine in about 2 hours having never done it before. Ideally you need VIDA to monitor the ATF temp. when setting the level and for resetting the 'transmission fluid change counter', plus a few larger hex sockets/torx bits (as per the video) if you don't have them. If you can get the dealer to do it before delivery then great negotiating!!

There is a factor of diminishing returns on sump dumping the auto box. The more ATF that is retained in the torque converter, the greater the number of dumps you have to do to have a meaningful effect on the percentage of clean new fluid to old burnt fluid. However the more you do the less effect each of the last ones has.
The box contains about 7 litres of fluid but you can only dump 2. I would want to change 75% of the fluid to ensure that there was m much more new than old fluid ion the box. Since you only change about 30% of the oil and each time you actually take out a mixture of old and new in the ration of 5:2, it will take 4 sump dumps to reduce the "old" content of the mixed oil to just below 25%. It would take 7 sump dumps to reduce the mixture to below 10% old oil content. That would be 14 litres of oil to reduce the contaminated content of 7 litres to below 10%! After this point the improvement gets less and less with each dump and isn't worth doing. If you are doing this job yourself it is only the cost of the oil but if you are paying a garage, that would be 4 "oil changes" labour charges plus the oil minimum and if you're really fussy, 7! So if you are using a garage, it's probably cheaper to ask them to completely drain the box and replace the 7 litres! If you just do one sump dump, you still have 70% contaminated oil in the box. The question to ask is what degree of contaminated oil can be left in the box with the least worry. While you'd pay more labour to drain the box, you'd use less oil than you would sump dumping.

So my process is dump 3, add 4, mix, dump 4, add 4, mix, set level (dump approx 1). Changes 75% of ATF in one hit for a sensible cost. Can't take credit for this as it comes from Yuri's Volvosweden vid!

"ÄT" is an abbreviation for "ÄndringsTillfälle", which means time of engineering change. So that's simply the week when they start to produce a car, where the basic version of the car (not buyer specified options) is different, compared to previous week. |
