Default Whining fuel pump for 240

I have had some great advice about this from this site & conclude that it is the "in tank" fuel pump. I shudder to think what volvo will charge.(part only is £80)
Does anyone know of any local experts (durham) who could save me a few quid??

Would you be able to pull a pump from a junkie and install it yourself? When you relieve it from the donor car you will get a good impression of what it takes to install it. You will find some good advice here: http://www.swedishbricks.net/faq/fuelpumps.html

Good luck,
Erling.

German, swedish and french do the pump for £36

http://www.gsfcarparts.com/shop/results.asp

(yes it is about half the Volvo price).

Have you taken it out yet and checked it really is the pump- in my case it turned out to be a bad connection between the tank plate and the pump itself..... I still have my old, probably OK pump filed away somewhere!

Cheers

Chris :-)

Ever since I bought my 240 two years ago, it has suffered from a very noisy pump.I've examined and tested the in-tank pump, replaced the fuel filter, checked fuses etc, all to no avail. Today I finally got round to replacing the main pump with one from a breakers. The result was amazing. No pump noise at all in the car !
I thought I'd mention this because with this problem we often seem to assume it is something other than the main pump that is causing the problem.

Hello Folks,

This whining/noisy main pump syndrome is often a hangover from the replacement/fixing of a one time faulty in-tank pump. It results from the main pump having to do all of the work for a (long) period of time. It is often well worth trying a replacement main pump unit.
