Have you considered taking her into a specialist seating company, they can do wonders with seating for disabled people, so giving you some advice on the seat and possible mods to resolve the problem for your Wife, might be far cheaper than what you lose selling that lovely XC.

I did the round of all the cash-for-cars companies when I let my last car go. Part ex price from the dealer was pretty average, but the discount on new was so good I didn't mind. Selling privately was possible but a lot of people do have an issue with outstanding finance. I cleared this before selling but LR finance were less rapid about updating whoever it is people check with, so I had some walk away because of that. I couldn't afford to sell too early though, so needed a back-stop in case private selling ran on a while. WBAC were the best online, but lots of stories of them haggling the backside off the quoted price when the day came. Out the blue another buyer said they would beat any quote, and added £400 to the WBAC price. Fixed a date, they came to the house, looked at the car for 5 minutes, knocked £200 off for damage to two alloys (fair enough, they did need polished), then had the money in my bank before they left. Painless, easy, honest and I ended up with £1800 more than the part ex offer.

I'd been dubious about a lot of those buyers before (and still am for many of them - over £3k variation in online valuations) but in the end it was a breeze. Definitely specific to some models though, some colleagues at work tried valuing their cars when they heard about it, and SUVs seemed to fair OK, but smaller and city cars were a mile off actual value.

Thanks for the post, would you mind telling me who were the people who offered you the extra cash at the last minute might be worth a call.

This has never caused me an issue selling, when I've just paid off the finance.
You obtain a letter of satisfaction from the finance co, ensuring it shows any matching HPI account references and make sure it has a phone number for prospective buyers to confirm.
I wouldn't expect anyone to just take my word for it that I'd paid it off.
I've actually even sold a car that still had £800 outstanding on it.
The buyer called my finance co. and paid that off, then gave me the difference in cash from the agreed sale price.
If finance is the only HPI issue, it can easily be worked around.

Sellmycarquick.com - online valuation was at the lower end, but they then dropped me a mail an hour later and significantly increased it to beat the rest.

Never caused me an issue before either, so was surprised when three potential buyers all raised it. One call to LR finance and they assured me it was now done (and offered to send letter confirming). Car was sold before the letter arrived, and it did say they no longer had an interest but that this was subject to no reversal of funds used to clear the finance, which may be up to two weeks (??) so don't know if it would actually have been useful for those buyers that walked.

Maybe the three interested parties just used it as a standard line to start negotiating? Dunno - I was advertising it at a price for a quick sale but wasn't going to be silly about selling rock bottom (had the dealer p/x and online options to fall back on) so maybe when I didn't immediately knock £1500 off they went elsewhere.

There are many unscrupulous people (even volvo owners) who will falsify documents to give impression finance company has no interest, even beyond the point where finance company is questioned, tell prospective buyer it's now registered keepers car to sell, and then reposses, and auction off.

Always nice to have cash in your hand but 26+ K is a big lump!

Best hide it well until the banks open!

I hope all went well but personally I would never take cash for that amount. My bank would ask questions if I tried to deposit it, and my dealer would refuse to accept it as payment. It's 4 years since I last experienced anything in retaliation to a situation like this, but my dealer was obliged to refuse cash over £10k and report it to police. My bank refused to accept cash of that value without assurances/evidence of origins. Both were thanks to money laundering regulations.

I would demand a CHAPS/BACS payment or walk away.
