If the spec is A3 then dont use A5/A1/C specs.
Shell helix ultra 5w40 is a great choice, the static viscosity is right at the thinner end, thus its in the middle of usual 5w30 and 5w40 oils, its kind of a 5w35, it also has a fantastic base stock and additives.
The edge 0w40 is good, as is Mobil FS 0w40 and Petronas syntium 7000 0w40. The only decent A3/B4 5w30 you are likely to find on sale is magnatec stop/start, the rest are generally inappropriate specs or cheap rubbish.

Edit;
5w30 isnt too thin if its been looked after, providing the oil is A3/B4 the hths has to be greater than 3.5, thus both a 30 and a 40 to this spec have the same 'working' viscosity in the bearings/galleries/pump. (Elsewhere though, like hydraulic tappets for example the static visc will have a bearing, but if its enough to negatively affect them using a 30 then they are ready for replacement. That said if they work fine using 40, then theres no prob so long as you use 40.)

You'd be better off posting in the relevant forum section!
That said, take it back to dealer, either they didnt reset service interval, in which case they are responsible for doing so, or theres something else awry, which needs sorting.

This is the 850 section.
You havent mentioned any car type.
If you meant something newer you have to say so, and post in the relevent section.
I think you are well on your way to your first DUNCE CAP

Its also C70 up to 2005, he has C70 2004... I suggest you might want to put the dunce cap back in the cupboard...

As for smith & allen, they arent known mainstream suppliers afaik (Ill have a dig) so I expect its the oil equivalent of a supermarket 'just add milk cake mix'...

Smith & Allen just seem to talk about shell oils and that they are one of the few importers, nothing about their own stuff, so I doubt its owt particularly amazing.
If they have such a cosy relationship with shell, it might be the budget formulation that gets put in triple qx bottles by shell (alledgedly), a basic group III stock with budget additive pack and polymers (be surprised if anything other). Ok for a short oci with easy driving, for an extended oci and/or harsh use itll soon lose it properties most likely.
