Default S40 Headache

Hi all,

Am new to the site, just got my first volvo about a month ago, and was very happy with it..............for a while.

Its a 1998 S40 CD 2.0 Occasionally when I try to start it the immobilizer light flashes and it wont start. Other times the light next to it (electronic system I think) flashes, then the immobilizer starts flashing and it wont start.

Sometimes, simply taking the key out and trying again will sort it. Other times it could take 10 mins of trying until it will start.

My wife had it to a volvo dealership when I was at sea and they bypassed the immobilizer power supply, it was fine for 2 weeks after that, now its back to its old tricks.

I spoke to dealership on the phone today, they said that as its intermittent, they could TRY bypassing other wires and see what would happen.

Only other option is to renew the harness which would cost more than the cars worth.

Anyone experienced this, or have any tips? If i could take the immobilizer out and wing it in a bin i would, but I'm guessing it wont be that easy.

Any pointers would be gratefully received

Jonnie

Hi,

I suggest you search this forum and use "immobilizer" as your search word.
You should come up with 12 posts with this issue.

Could well be the antenna or the ignition lock/barrel.

Welcome to the club, have fun here..

thanks everyone. I had an idea yesterday and we've not used the fobs for locking or unlocking since then. Been out in the car a few times since and had no starting problems. Could easily be coincidence tho.
I'll check the connections at the ignition barrel tomorrow.
Noticed on one of the other threads that someone had a similar problem and found the fault to be the cars battery not holding a charge thus not delivering enough voltage. Could this be a possibility?
Noticed when driving today that the red alarm LED on the left side of dash stays on constantly. Something wrong there also?
Thanks again for takin the time to read my question and give advice.
