Default S40 ball joints/lower arms?

Having had a couple of new front tyres, brake pads and tracking done at a tyre outlet in Welwyn, my son's been told the ball joints need replacing on his 1995 S40. They would want £95 per side to do the job.

Having spoken to GSF, it appears that this involves replacement of the 'lower arms and ball joints', as they're all one unit, so it seems. Apparently it's a dealer-only part, so GSF don't stock it or have a reference for it, so we're in the dark a bit re the actual part and associated costs.

Worth having a go, or is this a job best left for a specialist?

Can anyone throw some light on this/past experience etc?
It always looks so easy on 'Wheeler Dealers'!

TIA

This suspension arm can be got at any number of motor factors. I got mine from AtoZ motors, if I remember it cost about£30-£40 and it is an easy fit if you are handy with a spanner.
Ebay is another good place to source them from.

I recently replaced both lower arms - you can get a pair for about STG100 but bear in mind a front alignment is needed after wards so factor that in. Very easy to change them though if you have a decent jack. 4 bolts ber side and one morris taper... If you have a taper separator, its very easy.

Thanks for the advice - y'know, it's odd - he went to a tyre outlet for a couple of tyres on the front, and they still did the tracking, even though they stated that the arms and ball joints need replacing. Is it just me, or were they actually correct in doing this, knowing it would have to be done again in a few week's time?
Maybe I'm just a bit too cynical...

I think most fast fit places offer a check after a month after tracking a car so if he gets it done it will maybe be free. It will be worth checking.
