Power Upgrade for D3
Hi Guys,
Well it is official.... I am getting a MY11 version of the car. I have just been told that delivery is due in Sep and although that is a fair time away I am prepared to wait, it should be worth it. I am not too keen on the new engine as I have not been able to test drive it and have noticed that the fuel figs and Co2 are not too dissimilar to the outgoing model the only thing is that it is Euro V compliant. The engine is also down on power. I don't understand how Volvo can keep the 2.4 in the AWD and have better than last years MPG and Co2 and why they did not put that engine as the replacement to the D5 in the FWD version. Imagine 205 bhp in a FWD car . What a combination. So the purpose of this is that my dealer is now looking at what performance upgrade is available for the D3. I believe that I read somewhere that Volvo do a performance upgrade but am not sure. Any advice would help. If it is poss and I get any gen then I will post it. |

September why so late in the year?
The original XC60 had the same power and torque as the new D3 so it might not be required unless you need "s**t off a hot shovel" I guess. I'm going for the D3 but I tested the Freelander which has a similar engine specs and the car is a similar weight. From that test drive I figured the engine would be fine as is. I'm not the type to bother with extra power now if we could get more MPG then I hear you. |

The D3 also has a better power to weight ratio than the XC90. I doubt Volvo will be doing a power chip for an engine they don't even make yet.

Hi,
I hear what you were saying about power to weight. However, I dont see the need to have the engine replaced when it is clear that they managed to get the D5 engine (AWD) Euro V compliant as that was the reason for the change. If they are able to do that then surely it should have been quite simple to place that engine even if it is in a lower state of tune than the 205, say 190 and still be compliant. When you reduce the cc you also reduce the pulling power, ie it is now 400nm as opposed to 420nm. When you are paying the kind of money that we are paying then I think it is prudent to look at all options to ensure that they have bettered the vehicle. When a new model is released then it should at least be better than it's predesessor. The price has gone up but the power, torque have gone down and MPG has not moved very much it is still in the same VED bracket so no improvement there (geartronic). If it turns out that a new chip will better last year's engine figures and this is able to be done via Volvo dealers then mayby they should have put the new engine in the car AND chipped it to give the same figures, that way people would not be worried that they have tried a 2.4 engine and now have ordered a vehicle with an engine that is unknown. Chipping is after all a software upgrade, the same that we have on our phones and computers. Any bikers out there will know what i mean by simply saying Power Commander. |

The change of engine size might well have been marketing differentiation and the tax level changes that some european countries still, I believe, have at 2 litres.
Please note that the torque & power are lower; but so is the revs at which they happen. This is a good thing for a diesel but what happens in the real world is anydody's guess. We will have to wait & see. Personally the changes mean that I would possibly buy a D3 manual but a D5 automatic. |

Still waiting for details from my dealer about the Polestar upgrades that Volvo officially now do.
Here is a link for the 2.4D engine that they tinkle with. Notice that even though the BHP and the Torque have improved, the MPG is the same, even the Co2 is. How can that not be better?? If they can do this for the 2.4 and that is at 163BHP then what would the D3 be???? Have a look and let me know what you think. http://www.polestar.se/viewpage.asp?...6&edition=p_uk |

Anyone know how much it costs to get polestar upgrade and also does it impact your insurance? It sounds like an interesting upgrade re oomph without impacting fuel.....or are there other better / more cost effective options?

These figures dont read the same as the 2009 XC60 2.4 Geartronic I am looking at in the brochure with urban @30.4 extra urban@ 50.4 and combined @ 40.9 with a CO2 g/km of 183.
BHP is 175 and torque 420Nm Those polestar figures must be for a fairly old early XC60 2.4 with a relatively dirty engine so they are incomparable with the newer cleaner 2.4 let alone the D3 .I think one can only make do with the D3 as standard until we see what the chip men can do with it. |
