Thanks for the replies.
Jgjones. The etm is whatever one was on the car from new.
The contactless option is beyond my capability.
ThomasG. The etm was stripped and cleaned a couple of years ago.
I’m looking into a refurb unit but not found anything so far.
As you are so close to DMW, have you used them? If so how did you find them?
They are the only ones I can find close to me but it’s still a trek through traffic to to them.

I can't say "I used" DMW. Most of stuff I tend to sort out myself and learn as I go.

I frequently meet the guy in the morning, at the corner shop- he goes to his work, I go to mine, we'll nod to each other, sometimes even comment on each others Volvo.

I did ask some advice few times. One of them was ETM issue where I was told to replace it, just like you.
As I said before- just cleaning it sorted it out.

And few years from last clean is a lot of time- I'd advise to do it again, shouldn't take long. Mind- mine is no-turbo, so access is probably easier. Anyway, on mine it takes about 30 minutes. All you needs a screwdriver for hose clips, 13(?)mm spanner for ETM body, cloth.

Other occasions with DMW were just quotations on fault readings, software update etc. I never really gotten to do them, but that's different story.

How do I find them? Just like any other garage- they're NOT charity. They're there to make money. Don't expect anything else and don't blame them. I don't.

Thomas, thanks for the offer but I’m down in Kent for a few days.
Mines a turbo model so access is more difficult
I’ve spoken to a neighbour who owns a garage and he said taking the etm out cleaning and putting back would probably come to the same amount as replacing it with a new unit. Plus there’s always the possibility it makes no difference.
Believe it not the error message has now gone away so I’ll have to see how it goes

May cost same as replacement ETM..

Uh.. I'm out of words.

The actual cost is £0. Well.. Maybe half a glass of petrol or methylated spirit.

But, get, I've said what I had to say.

Now its up to you

Thanks for the links. At least I’ve got other options now other than replacement.
Thomas, even I thought the comments about costing the same for cleaning the etm being the same as replacement cost odd!
Thanks again.

I hope this time I've got link right.

Don't mind the language (Russian/Ukrainian), kill the sound and watch the footage.
This is how to get ETM out on my motor.
https://youtu.be/JiEdxJCOueg

On turbo equipped I'd expect an extra hose, or maybe tighter space.

Ahhhh.... Got it.
